TEENAGE racing ace Max Chilton secured a podium finish in the first round of the British Formula 3 International Series at Oulton Park, Cheshire.

The 16-year-old from Norwood Hill, who drives for Hitech, started fourth on the grid for the first race of the day and edged through to secure a second place behind Carlin driver Oliver Turvey.

Chilton began race two in sixth position but the aftermath of a collision between Turvey and Nick Tandy meant he slipped back to 14th before passing the chequered flag, which was taken by Turvey's team mate Jaime Alguersuari.

Chilton said: "Race one was brilliant - my first ever podium in Formula 3 and I'm still only 16 so I'm over the moon. The thing is the result in the first race pushed up my expectations for race two, which is why I was so nervous going into the race. I did so well in the first race I put a lot of pressure on myself for the second one, but it wasn't to be."

Chilton ended the first round of the championship in fifth place with 15 points.
