Teams are in training and counting down to this year's YMCA's Virtual Channel Challenge.

Reigate and Redhill YMCA is again running the fitness-testing fundraiser in which ten teams of up to ten people race to row the English Channel.

The indoor virtual event will be held at the YMCA in Princes Road, Redhill, on Sunday, February 20.

Over a distance of 21 miles, the teams will be linked to a central screen so that their progress is continually charted, right through to the race for the line.

The Challenge will take between two and three hours and team members will row in rotation throughout, with the team finishing first winning a free month’s adult membership for each participant to the YMCA gym and fitness classes.

All rowers taking part will also be given a free induction to the gym and a medal for competing.

Last year’s event was won by the team from Reigate Fire Station.

Proceeds from this year's Channel Challenge will go towards supporting YMCA projects including the Sovereign Gold Coin Appeal, which is aiming to breathe new life into the Sovereign Centre, Woodhatch, and benefit local children and young people with disabilities.

Entrants must be over 16 years of age.
