The Samaritans of East Surrey, based in Reigate, mark 50 years of service with the reopening of their newly refurbished centre.

Having established one of the earliest Samaritans centres back in 1964, they opened their telephone lines, and then their doors on 1st November 1964, just a few years after the charity was originally founded by Chad Varah.

Samaritan volunteers and their patrons Danny and Joanna Murphy were joined by David Pay, Mayor of Reigate and Banstead who cut the ribbon and officially re-opened the centre.

Pauline Mallinson, Chairman of The Samaritans of East Surrey, said: “I am so proud of all we have achieved over the past 50 years.

"We are able to provide this support thanks to generous donors and supporters, but mostly thanks to our amazing volunteers without whom we could not operate."

The charity will be holding an information evening for people who are interested in becoming a volunteer.

The n events, at 8pm on December 15th, is at the Samaritans Centre on Reigate High Street.
