An East Surrey college student scooped two awards at the college’s media awards and found out he had a job in the film industry in London the same day.Delighted Tom Veale, 19, was offered a job as a runner with The Moving Picture Company in Soho, which has produced Adidas adverts and pop videos for bands like Basement Jaxx.

After spending two years at East Surrey College completing a BTEC in media, Tom got the job even though his employer said she would not usually employ anyone under the age of 22.

Tom said he was thrilled to have been selected even though he knew the job would not be very glamorous at first: “I’d like to learn how to do everything. At the beginning I’ll be cleaning up, making people tea, getting food and stuff but that’s the way you have to start.” He said the hands on nature of the course probably helped him as he was able to get a show reel together, learnt how to do editing and shot a film on 16mm film: “We were using equipment most people don’t even get to use in the third year of a degree course.” While Tom said he would be sad to leave East Surrey College he was looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead in his new career.
