Opponents of the expansion of Redhill airport have stepped up their campaign this week in an attempt to stop it being written into government policy.

They had hoped the developers, Redhill Aerodrome Ventures (RAV), would be put off after the government left it out of a consultation on its South East air strategy.

But at a public meeting at Nutfield Memorial Hall last week, RAV told an audience of more than 100 residents that it was still lobbying for inclusion in a White Paper to be published later this year.

There are still no definite maps for the expansion, although at the meeting more information on where the airport will be and its noise contours was given.

Angela Green, of the campaign group Keep Redhill Airfield Green (KRAG), said after the meeting: “We want people not to assume that it’s a dead duck – and to know that they need to write to the government before the deadline of June 30.

“We are hoping to remind the government that expansion at Redhill has been examined before and that people don’t want it.” Though the Redhill option is not in the consultation document, RAV responded with a proposal for the aerodrome’s expansion, and believes it is still possible the government could include it in future policy.

Ms Green said: “This was the first opportunity the community has had to hear what RAV had to say, and some were quite shocked.

“When they saw the map, people were saying ‘where’s my house gone?’ or ‘where’s my farm gone?’.” Jon Cousens, of RAV, said: “We’d have to make a planning application, which would almost certainly go to a public inquiry.

“Then all the people who don’t agree would have the chance to have their say.” Write before June 30 to Future Development of Air Transport – South East, Department for Transport, Zone 1/28C, Freepost London 17806, London SW1P 4YS.
