Three teenage boys have been arrested following a suspicious fire in Horley last night.
The three – a 14-year-old boy from Horley and two 15-year-old boys from Smallfield - were arrested on suspicion of arson.
A Surrey Police spokeswoman, speaking this morning, said the boys were in police custody.
Officers were called to the Elbourne House four-storey block of flats in Lumley Road at around 6pm after reports a fire had been started there deliberately.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service went to the scene and put out the fire, which is believed to have started when a roll of carpet was set alight in the stairwell.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Jo Clarke, said: "Luckily no-one was hurt as a result of this mindless act, and I would appeal to anyone who can assist with our investigation to contact us as a matter of urgency with information.”
Reigate and Banstead Neighbourhood Inspector Dan Gutierrez, said: "It was great to see the Horley community pull together following the incident last night, and I would like to thanks those, in particular local shops in the area, for providing shelter and free refreshments to those affected, and the emergency crews attending.”
Anyone who can help detectives with their investigation is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference 45140023993. The independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
