MP Since - 1992 Majority - 15,921 Born - 16/11/1956, Married, 1 son, 2 daughters. Education - Ludgrove School, Bradfield College, Lincoln College, Oxford (MA Hons). Previous Occupation - Investment Analyst Laing & Cruisckshank (1981-85), S.G. Warburg Securities, Investment Analyst (1985-87), Corporate Finance (1987-92), Director (1989-92).

Personal Overview - Tory loyalist coming from a City business background. Experience in Local Government with Conservative flagship Wandsworth London Borough. Appears to be a liberal on social matters and also has a significant interest in environmental issues. Failed attempt to pilot Hedgerows Bill through Commons in 1993. Decided to stand down from the Shadow Cabinet in June 2002 for family reasons. Made a return to the Shadow Cabinet in December 2005, once again holding his former Environmental portfolio. Was removed from the Shadow Cabinet in the January 2009 reshuffle.

Chairman of the Conservative Agriculture/Rural Affairs/Environment Committee (2001-03). Treasurer of All Party Climate Change Group (2005-). Member of the Selection Committee (1997-1998). Member of the Finance and Services Select Committee (1997-2001). Member of the Select Liason (2003-2006). Member of the Environmental Audit Select Committee, Chairman (2003-05). Member of the Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee (2009-). PPS to Jonathan AItken, and subsequently Virginia Bottomley (1994-96). Promoted to Whips Office in (1996). Opposition Deputy Chief Whip (1997-98), Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport (1998-2001), for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (2001-02), (2005-09).

Characteristics - Well organised MP who has shown an interest in environmental, business and Local Government issues. Signed Euro-sceptic EDM motion in June 1992, but was faced by Referendum candidate in the 1997 election. He was awarded the Public Affairs News 'Politician of the Year' 2005 in recognition of his work on the environment. He also is a Director of Plantlife International.
