THE head of the Defence Estates performed the honours to open G3 Ltd's new £2 million premises on Portland.

Vice Admiral Peter Dunt unveiled a Portland Stone plaque engraved by stonemason John Broddle to mark the occasion at the Brunel Building on Navigator Park at Osprey Quay.

Vice Admiral Dunt is the chief executive of the Defence Estates. He was secretary to Admiral Wood-ward and served as the Group Logistics Officer for the Falklands conflict on board HMS Hermes in 1982.

The opening was also attended by G3 Systems directors, staff and guests.

G3 provides the UK armed forces with solutions to make life in hostile locations more bearable for those on the ground.

Staff design and supply deployable systems, often housed within containers and tents and shelters.

Facilities include field accommodation, toilets, showers, laundries, offices and kitchen systems.

The company, which is based in Royston, Hertfordshire, also provides a number of medical solutions to the UK Ministry of Defence.

After the unveiling of the plaque Vice Admiral Dunt commented on G3 Systems' reputation within the defence supply chain and its commitment to supporting the ongoing requirements of the UK forces.

He added: "The type of equipment and services G3 systems provides are essential to the on going welfare of our troops in the field and around the globe."

G3's systems include such items as CT scanners, equipment for X-rays, surgery, intensive therapy and intensive care wards, dentistry, physiotherapy and pathology laboratories.

G3 Systems managing director Mike Pond said in a speech at the ceremony: "The move to this modern purpose made building marks G3 Systems' rapid growth and its commitment to growing our business from our Portland base'.

The new 21,000-square-foot building includes modern office space of 6,276 sq ft and a large workshop facility of 14,836 sq ft.

It is a stone's throw away from G3's former site, also within the same estate.

The name Brunel Building was selected following a vote by G3 staff - an apt name as the building houses engineering design team.
