VISITORS from the most remote inhabited island on earth' have returned home after their annual visit to Portland.

Around 90 people from St Helena - a small British dependency in the South Atlantic with no airport - sailed into Portland Port last week.

Now the ship, which is named St Helena, has set out on its return voyage.

The Royal Mail ship St Helena makes the journey just twice a year and is the only direct link to the UK.

It sails to Portland once in the spring and once in the autumn, and the rest of the year works out of Cape Town in South Africa.

To celebrate the arrival visitors joined local and national travel writers and travel agents at a reception on board the vessel.

St Helena lies 1,200 miles from the south west coast of Africa and 1,800 miles from the coast of South America.

It was discovered in 1502 by Portuguese admiral Joao da Nova and has a population of around 5,000 people.
