ON-LOAN defender Charlie Knight breathed new life into Chippenham's promotion challenge on Tuesday night with his first goal for the Bluebirds.

Knight, whose loan spell from Salisbury City has been extended until the end of April, grabbed the only goal of a timid encounter at Rugby's Butlin Road.

Playing out of position on the left side of midfield, Knight seized on a mistake from defender Craig Herbert and drilled a low shot under the body of Rugby stopper Farhad Afandiyev.

The Bournemouth University student also scored for Salisbury City reserves last week, and the 20-year-old has not stopped smiling since.

He said: "It's always nice to score a goal, but particularly when you get the winning goal like I did tonight.

"I also grabbed one playing for Salisbury on the left wing the other day, but you can hardly call me prolific."

Knight revealed he is most comfortable at left-back, but insists he is ready and willing to play a more advanced role for Chippenham.

He said: "When I joined I told the secretary I was a defender who could also do a job in midfield.

"For some reason he put me down as a midfielder. It doesn't really matter because Adie knows what my best position is.

"When Adie told me I would be starting I presumed it would be in defence. But when I saw Alex Stanley's name on the team sheet I thought I was on the bench.

"I'm glad Adie gave me the chance to show what I can do and that I repaid him with a goal."

Knight's strike midway through the first half came during a period of intense pressure for the visitors, which also saw Dave Gilroy head against the crossbar.

The floodlights failed during the half-time interval, but it was Chippenham who were the more switched on after the break.

Afandiyev made fine saves from Gilroy and the lively Sean Seavill as the visitors looked to wrap up the points.

Chippenham goalkeeper Chris Snoddy was a virtual spectator for most of the night, but he did react smartly to keep out Jason Taylor's goal-bound header.

"It was an important result for us after losing so heavily on Saturday," said Knight.

"Hopefully I can keep my place in the side, although I know there are plenty of quality players waiting to come back in."
