Keen trialist Shaun Button has paid his own air fare from Sydney in a bid to win a Cougars contract.

The Australian utility back arrives in the country on Thursday and quickly gets the chance to impress in Sunday's friendly at Batley.

Player-coach Barry Eaton admits the player's enthusiasm is second to none and believes he has the ability to prove a success in National League Two.

"The lad has shown great appetite to get over here by arranging his own ticket and we'll give him a shot on Sunday and also against Bradford next week," said Eaton.

"He's certainly backing himself and we're hoping he'll be the utility back we've been looking for.

"He was a junior at Hunter Mariners and also played in the Jersey Flegg competition with Newcastle Knights, so he's got all the credentials and has played at a decent level.

"But we've not seen as much footage of him as we'd have liked and if we were to sign him he'd be our second and final overseas quota.

"Because of that, we have to be a little more meticulous in making the decision so that's why we're having this look.

"Fair play to him though, he's come over here with no promises from us. Now we'll see what he can do."

Button, 24, has also represented New South Wales rugby union at under-21 level and returned to the 15-man code last season.

If the Aussie does sign at Cougar Park he will join fellow countryman Brendan Rawlins, the former Wests Tigers prop who is already in situ and gearing up for his debut at the weekend.

Eaton said: "Brendan's had some training sessions but the only down side is we've not been able to get out onto the field since he's been here because of this lovely weather."

l Cougars legend Phil Stephenson is to be inducted into the Keighley Hall of Fame on Friday. The stalwart prop, who retired last season, becomes only the 13th member of the exclusive club. All supporters are welcome at Cougar Park, 7.30pm, and admission is free.
