Hadyn Ellis, a former pupil of St Julians High School, continued working during his last months despite extreme discomfort caused by cancer.
A tribute issued by Cardiff University, where he was deputy vice-chancellor, said his reputation was established first for his pioneering research on the cognitive psychology of face recognition.
