BOLTON Wanderers made an audacious but unsuccessful attempt to sign David Beckham.

Encouraged by the revelation that the California-bound former England captain might never play for Real Madrid again, the Whites explored the possibility of bringing him to the Reebok on loan.

But the answer was "No".

"David Beckham would only come back to the Premiership to play for Manchester United," Sam Allardyce said, confirming that he had made an enquiry.

In fact Beckham's representatives let it be known over the weekend that he was not interested in joining any club on loan before he takes up his £128 million five-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy in August.

Nevertheless, his position at the Bernabeu appears to be untenable after head coach Fabio Capello announced on Saturday that, although he could continue to train with the squad, he would never be picked for the team again.

Capello, furious with Beckham for creating such a media circus by signing for the MLS club in the middle of the Spanish season, said: "I can't count on him any more. How can I, when he has a contract with another club?"

Beckham, in turn, is believed to be just as angry that Capello made the announcement that effectively ends his Real playing days, without telling him first.

The situation could change, since Capello himself is understood to be under pressure from certain directors of the Spanish giants. But, for the time being, the coach is standing firm.

A defiant Beckham said he would continue to train and make himself available for selection.

His spokesman said: "David is surprised at the quotes from Capello as no-one from the club has informed him of this intentions. He will continue to give the club his full commitment."
