Martin Lewis has warned that potentially "millions" of people could be thrown into "fuel poverty" due to energy bill prices which are likely to rise this year.

He has warned people can expect to take a large hit to energy bills which could leave families being forced to decide between eating and heating their homes.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain the Money Saving Expert founder appealed to the Government to intervene.

He said: "That's why I have been calling on the Government, it has to intervene, it has to do something.

"There are lots of people out there who can afford the increase and won't like it, but there are also millions of people who will be thrown into fuel poverty who will get close to having that choice between heating and eating."

Lewis criticised the Government for having "blanket solutions" about its decisions in the energy market that makes some worse off.

He added: "For years we've had the problem that I pay less to boil my kettle than the struggling 90-year-old grandmother who does nothing, because I play the system and that can't be right can it?"

How much could energy bills rise by in 2022?

The Government’s energy price cap is due to be revised in February, with the increase put onto customers’ bills from April.

According to Cornwall Insights, an energy sector specialist, bills could rise from £1,277 a year under the current price cap to £1,865 a year when the next revision is announced, a rise of 46%.

They also predict it could spike to £2,240 a year at the following quarterly revaluation in August 2022 without a significant fall in energy prices globally.
