Covid deaths in the UK rose to their highest daily level since early March this week, while cases are at their highest for almost three months.

The latest figures come as Downing Street said it is keeping a “very close eye” on increasing case rates and after a leading scientific advisor warned it is “critical” that the Covid-19 booster programme is accelerated.

Boris Johnson is facing pressure as fears grow over the impact a rise of cases could have on the NHS over the winter months.

During a Downing Street press conference on Wednesday, Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: "We've been in a race, a race between the vaccine and the virus. And although we're ahead in that race, the gap is narrowing.

"We've come so far thanks to the efforts of so many. But with winter ahead, we can't blow it now.

"So we're going to do everything we can to maintain our lead by strengthening our vaccination programme as our primary line of defence."
