SALISBURY is in a 20-way UK ‘beauty contest’ with other cities across the nation to land its very own official version of Monopoly.

The city boasts one of the world’s most famous and visited landmarks, Stonehenge, as well as a host of other tourist magnets including the imposing Salisbury Cathedral.

The announcement of the winner takes place next Thursday, with the city hoping to join others like Winchester, Southampton, and Bournemouth which all boast their own versions of the world-famous board game.

The winning city will see its Monopoly board themed in sets, from tourism to heritage, culture to shopping, hotels to sport, education to business, charity to travel, and more.

Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, and Salisbury Racecourse would be heavy odds-on to land leading spots on any Salisbury Monopoly board, say Winning Moves UK, which is producing the game.

The Chance and Community Chest cards will be largely themed too.

George Shrimpton, custom games executive, says: “The winning edition would feature the great and good of their city and if Salisbury were to win we would expect to be wonderfully spoilt for choice putting a game together.

“Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, The Guildhall, Salisbury Museum, Arundells – the city is blessed with landmarks that attract many millions from across the UK and the world.”

Others in the running are Chichester, Coventry, Durham, Truro, and Ely.

Organisers have called it a a UK ‘cathedral beauty contest’.

Winning Moves UK is producing the game under official license from Monopoly owners Hasbro.

The winning edition will be available from October at all major retailers, as well as very widely online.
