Two talented 11-year-old Horley athletes helped Crawley Athletics Club team win the Sussex AA West Division.

Ornella Orfenov of Ardingly College and Freya Baker of Lingfield Notre Dame School train and compete for Crawley Athletics Club in track and field events and for their schools. However, living in Surrey, they are both registered as Surrey County athletes.

Both U13 girls have excelled this season reaching No1 rankings at Crawley AC, Ornella in 70m hurdles and high jump (joint) and 3rd in long jump, Freya ranking No1 in the javelin and discus, also ranking 2nd for shot.

The young athletes started off their season by competing at the Surrey County Championships in May 2014, Ornella winning Silver and Freya Bronze medals in the U13 High Jump final.

The pair competed at the Withdean atheletics stadium, in Brighton, in the Sussex Under 13 League Final.

The girls and their teams competed against nine other Sussex clubs.

Freya threw the Javelin 25m, a personal best, securing first place in the Sussex League Final and the top position in the Surrey County rankings for U13 javelin, as well as coming 3rd place in the discus.

Ornella took 3rd place in long jump and 4th in 70m hurdles in which the league record was broken.

The girls hope to commence the 2015 season by competing in the Surrey County Championships in May where they continue in the Under 13s group for their second year.

Freya hopes to compete in year 7 Javelin and Discus for Lingfield Notre Dame School in the ISA Championships next summer. She won through the ISA Regionals in to the ISA Nationals at Birmingham in the 100m relay team this summer.

For the winter Ornella and Freya will continue to train at Crawley AC at K2, on their newly laid track but will also enjoy some friendly rivalry by playing Hockey and Netball against each other in their schools' fixtures!

The girls wish to say a big 'thank you' to the Crawley AC coaches and their teachers for the support and encouragement which has enabled them to excel this year!
