Surrey Police investigating how a man came to be on fire in a Horley graveyard this week said there were no suspicious circumstances.

The man, aged in his 20s and from Crawley, was spotted alight in the grounds of St Bartholomew's Church in Church Road on Monday, February 17, at just after 9pm.

A group of people rushed to his aid and managed to put the flames out before police arrived on the scene. He was taken to hospital by ambulance crews for treatment with injuries described as life-threatening. This week, a Surrey Police spokeswoman said the man remains in a critical condition in hospital, being treated for serious burns.

The spokeswoman added: “An investigation was launched following the incident and several vital witnesses came forward as a result. “It has now been deemed that there are no suspicious circumstances or third party involvement around how the man sustained his injuries.”

She concluded: “Members of the public and the media are thanked for their assistance with the investigation.”
