Kew 1st XI got their season off to a winning start on Saturday beating Bagshot by 99 runs on Kew Green, writes Stuart Cosstick.

In a 45-over per side friendly match, Kew batted first.

Kew started well, with the openers putting on a half century partnership. Ed Griffin made 35 and David Rowley, on debut, a well compiled 56.

However, the star of the show for the home team was Ali Jaffer, who made an unbeaten 104 in quick time.

Jaffer played some wonderful strokes as he flayed the Bagshot bowlers around Kew Green. With Nick Shuter contributing 34, Kew amassed 285-4 in their 45 overs.

Bagshot started brightly and looked to be in the hunt in the early overs. However, the introduction of Joe Faithfull's (6-42) left arm spin turned the game firmly in Kew's favour. The visitors were below strength and lost wickets quickly to see them bowled out for 186 in the 36th over.

Tougher tests await Kew 1s when their Home Counties league season begins on 12th May, but this was an encouraging victory.

Kew II also enjoyed a victory away at Claygate. Kew batted first and hit 240-7 in their 40 overs thanks to Gavin Milne's 68, plus contributions from Mike Hickman (40), Stuart Cosstick (33) and Hugh George (29).

The home side put up a brave fight when they batted and got themselves into a position to win the match at 164-4, but Kew held their nerve and Guy Waton (4-57) and David Sheppard (3-44) were Kew's successful bowlers, as Claygate collapsed to 193 all out.
