Elderly people are being warned to be vigilant after a spate of burglaries involving bogus workers - including one where thieves posed as police.

Two men, posing as officers, stole cash from an elderly man in Croston Road, Farington Moss, Leyland, around 10am on Saturday.

The 70-year-old was in his back garden when a smartly-dressed man, in his 40s, asked for directions.

Then two other men knocked at the door, posing as undercover police officers and wearing identity badges.

They pensioner let them in and while one kept him talking, the second stole a small amount of money.

The two offenders were described as white and aged between 18 and 25.

Both were smartly dressed and one wore a pale blue short-sleeved shirt.

The second was said to be clean shaven with fair hair and was around 5ft 7in tall.

Det Sgt Claire Lancaster said: "Never allow anyone into your home unless you are happy that they are there for a genuine reason.

"If you are not happy do not let them in. Always ask for ID."
