GROUPS and projects in Ilminster and Crewkerne may soon be battling for funding in an X-Factor style event.

Members at South Somerset District Council's Area West committee discussed plans to hold community forums in the towns at a meeting last Wednesday.

Moves for forums in the town's came after the success of the first Chard event in February.

The forum saw people bid for a slice of a £30,000 cash pot, which was handed out in an X-Factor style forum.

People with good ideas to improve the town pitched their initiative to try and land a grant of up to £5,000, with votes cast by those attending to decide which groups received the money.

Members proposed that similar events would be held in Ilminster and Crewkerne, in the autumn using the same format.

It was suggested that £25,000 would be set aside from each town's community plan, supplemented by a further £5,000 from Area West reserves.

Members were keen that the outlining villages were included in the forum, so no one missed out on required funding.

It was also suggested that differences in sizes of forums was taken into account when the grant total was finalised.
