Motorists faced rush-hour chaos when a car crashed into the back of a bus.

Police said the accident, just before 4pm yesterday, came at a nightmare time.

The Fiat Punto collided with the Stagecoach bus on Croft Road, just past the junction of St Margaret's Road.

It took more than an hour for the wreckage to be moved and the road to be fully open.

PC Jay Clifton, of Swindon traffic police, said: "The problem was it was such a busy time of day that we had a lot of queuing.

"People were leaving the Nationwide building and Ridgeway School, absolutely everything, it was just a nightmare time for us.

"It's the worst time of day to have a collision like this, anywhere in the town. We tried to clear it as quickly as possible but with something as big as a bus it's not easy and people have to be patient."

Fire crews and paramedics attended the scene but the woman driving the Fiat and the male bus driver were not hurt.

The road was clear by about 5.30pm.
