THERE was a big event at the Roman Catholic church in Evesham in April 1957, when a Benedictine priest was ordained, the first for 400 years .
The Journal reported that Dr Francis Grimshaw, Archbishop of Birmingham, ordained to the priesthood the Rev Dom Wulstan Probert, a monk of the Order of St Benedict.
Dom Wulstan was the first Benedictine priest to have been ordained in Evesham since the abbey was suppressed over 400 years ago. He was the youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs A Probert, of 30 Cambria Road, and a monk of Belmont Abbey, Hereford.
It was arranged he would return to Evesham to celebrate High Mass of Easter at midnight on Easter Eve.
