A CITY'S mayor got on his bike yesterday to launch what is hoped will grow into the North-East's biggest annual cycle ride.

More than 1,000 cyclists are expected to take part in the first Durham Big Ride on September 16, around a 25-mile loop through the County Durham countryside.

Organisers from Durham city and county councils hope that, along with elite cyclists, the event will attract large numbers of families and people trying to improve their fitness and work on a healthier lifestyle.

It is also expected that many riders will use the event to raise money for charities through sponsorship.

Durham City Mayor Jeff Lodge got into the saddle yesterday outside the town hall, to get the event under way.

The Big Ride will include a day-long cycling festival, including entertainment and exhibitions by stunt riders.

There will be two marshalled routes for cyclists, both starting from County Hall, at Aykley Heads.

The main Big Ride route will take cyclists into the countryside along minor roads - which will be closed for the event - through Sacriston, Annfield Plain, Leadgate and then back to Durham City on the Lanchester Line cycle route.

A Little Ride is aimed at children, novices and the less able-bodied, and follows a three-mile off-road loop through the grounds of Aykley Heads, following part of the route of the city's proposed Necklace Park.

Durham County Council traffic manager Dave Wafer said: "We are hoping to get 1,000 participants in our first year and we want to build it up into the biggest cycling event in the North-East.

"We want to try to encourage people to get fit, and get people interested in cycling, but also bring people into Durham. Hopefully, it will draw people from across the region."

Durham City Council leader Councillor Fraser Reynolds said: "What could be better than a ride on a bicycle to see what a great place we live in? It is a fabulous opportunity for all manner of people to get fit and healthy."

Fees are £15 per person, or £30 for a family ticket for two adults and up to four children.
