A SUSPECT suitcase which caused a North-East airport to be evacuated this morning was empty, security experts have confirmed.
Durham Tees Valley Airport re-opened at about 9.45am after Army bomb disposal units moved in and established there was no danger.
Witnesses reported hearing a controlled explosion.
The airport was evacuated and roads sealed off at 7.30am when the suspect package sparked the alert after it was left unattended for more than two hours.
Two flights, a KLM flight and an Eastern Airlines flight from Aberdeen, have been circling the airport this morning.
A BMI flight from London did land but passengers were not allowed off the aeroplane.
Police confirmed the alarm was raised by security staff. All passengers and staff were evacuated following a scan of the luggage.
Passangers have been warned to remain alert and not leave baggage unattended.
