Happy years playing stoolball
I WAS surprised to read in Life that stoolball has just been recognised as a sport.
I played stoolball for Junction Road School in Burgess Hill at the age of 12 in 1934. We won the schools' final and the banner, which shows stoolball as it used to be played with a stool. The next year we lost in the semi-final.
Later, I played for the Burgess Hill team which had a good many successful years until I married in 1951 and moved to Reigate.
I realise that stoolball is mainly a Sussex game but I would have classed it as a sport many years ago - what else could it be?
I felt that I had to write to you as I spent many happy years playing stoolball.
Mollie Dungate (nee Agate), Arbutus Road, Meadvale.
