Horley U16 win cliffhanger by one run
Horley U16 98
Roffey U16 97-6
IN TYPICAL fashion Horley U16s kicked off their Sussex league campaign with a cliffhanger victory by one run, made all the more impressive as the majority of the side Horley fielded were U14 and U15s.
Traditionally batting first, Horley lost a couple of early wickets to leave them 15-2 but rallied as George Banks and Angus Kirk took up the challenge against Court (2-9).
Batting looked easy as U16 veteran Banks pulled and drove his way to an imperious (35) having retired at (30) and returned for a slog, he was shadowed shot for shot by the elegant U15 Angus Kirk, his mixture of carefully placed cuts and flicks propelled him to (29) as Horley reached 60-3.
Another tumble of wickets to the impressive Davis (5-9) saw Horley all out for 98 although with the wet outfield this was worth more. Debut making Matt Hill played some interesting shots in a cameo innings, However a considerable improvement in the Horley batting is required.
In reply Roffey progressed steadily just behind the run rate as Monks (22) and Rivers (16) took them to 40-2, and with 12 overs to get 58 another tight match looked inevitable, Horley were pleased to welcome back all rounder Andrew Cass after nearly nine months out with a leg injury.
Horley's fielding tightened up to exert pressure on the batsmen from all corners of the ground as the guile of Angus Kirk (2-20) backed up by the rapid swingers of U14 Matt Ware (2-17) held the batsmen in check, to leave the visitors needing six off the last over.
A last-ball drama in front of the usual big expectant Horley crowd saw Roffey fail by just one run, as Horley once again held their nerve to take the full 20 points.
Horley U12s triumphed by 30 runs at East Grinstead on Sunday in the Identilam Sussex league.
This Sunday Horley U16s entertain Slinfold whilst the U12s travel to Slinfold.
Next Monday the U11s travel to Lingfield, Tue sees the U15s home to Crawley, Wed the U13s entertain Horsham and on Thursday the U14s take on Felbridge, also at Horley.
