Bonnets galore!

WOODHATCH volunteers and members have made 200 bonnets using a Save The Children knit kit. It was a project that began when volunteer Joan Harris was moved by a story about newborn babies dying in Sierra Leone and Kenya on Channel 4's The Paul O' Grady Show. Woodhatch staff soon got behind her, handing out knitting patterns. The Woodhatch Centre Hair Salon invited customers to knit them as they sat under the hairdryers. Their target was 100 hats, a number they doubled.
Scouts win highest award

THE 34th Reigate (Meadvale) Explorer Unit met HRH the Duke of Kent for the St George's Day parade of Queen's Scouts. Pictured are Oliver Lawrence and Ashley Back with Explorer Leader Spencer Mitchell at Windsor Castle. They won the Queen's Scout Award, the highest in Scouting. To gain the award the two boys completed a four-day hike in the Malvern hills and worked on the hospital gardens at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill.
Colouring competition

A SPRING colouring competition was held at Holmesdale School in Reigate. Estate agent Ibbett Mosely organised the competition and received more than 160 entries. The winners, pictured with head Sarah Beasley and Ibbett Moseley Reigate manager David Bretherton, were given certificates and chocolate eggs.
Cubs tidy Reigate Castle grounds

REIGATE Cub Scouts collected ten sacks of rubbish when they gave the Reigate Castle grounds a spring clean. The tidy-up was part of the Love Where You Live initiative by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council which encourage communities to look after their neighbourhoods. A clean-up day has also been organised in Reigate Heath and residents all over the borough are being encouraged to hold their own spring clean events. The council will supply litter picks, bags and protective gloves for anyone wishing to take part and will collect the bagged rubbish the following day. Telephone: 01737 276000. Rotary anniversary

HORLEY Rotary Club this year celebrates its 60th anniversary. Pictured are Robert Raw, son of founding president Dr Theo Raw, and current president David Ross, who were presented with a certificate of recognition from Rotary International by district governor Alan Knight. A raffle raised £400 for St Catherine's Hospice.

RESIDENTS woke up to wintry scenes on Sunday when around 2in of snow fell throughout the morning, putting an end to Friday's hopes that summer had finally arrived. Borough councillor Surrinder Banwait photographed the unseasonal weather. He said: "It was fantastic to see so many people in Priory Park. There were people sledging and making snowmen."

Easter winner

MOLLY Atwell, eight, from Reigate, collected an Easter hamper from Rob Lyne, duty manager of Sainsbury's in Redhill, after winning the store's Easter hunt prize draw.
80-year-old mountain bike winner

A MOUNTAIN bike was won by an 80-year-old customer at Sainsbury's, Redhill, in a Sport Relief prize draw run in conjunction with Coca Cola. Paul Hoffman, pictured with Eddie Lamber from Coca Cola and Sainsbury's duty manager Rob Whittaker, bought his last bike in 1980 and said he was excited to have a new one.
Church thinks the world of them

A METAL wall sculpture of both halves of the world was presented to two long-serving congregation members leaving Redhill Baptist Church. Robert and Stella Ashurst were involved with the church for more than 30 years, with Robert acting as church treasurer, elder and secretary. The couple, who are moving to Plymouth, received tributes from previous minister the Rev Richard Soar and current minister the Rev Dr James Collins.
Horley mayor hosts charity curry night

A SPICY charity dinner has raised £1,500. The mayor of Horley, Simon Marshall, hosted a curry evening at the Albert Rooms, Albert Road, in aid of Brambles Respite Care Centre in Horley and St Catherine's Hospice in Crawley. Guests included East Surrey MP Peter Ainsworth, the mayor of Crawley, Sally Blake, and the deputy mayor of Reigate and Banstead, Rachel Turner. Entertainment was provided by Brambles Amateur Theatrical Society and Mr Ainsworth hosted an auction which generated some generous bids. Cllr Marshall said: "I am so pleased that it was such a success and I am delighted we were able to support these two local charities in this way. All the guests enjoyed their evening immensely. I would like to record my thanks to all those companies and individuals who gave raffle and auction prizes." Pictured are Cllr Marshall, Mr Ainsworth, Cllr Sally Blake and Cllr Keith Blake.
90 years of the RAF

A SHACKLETON reconnaissance aircraft was on show at celebrations to mark the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force organised by Gatwick Aviation Museum and Horley RAF Association. Redhill cadets take quiz trophy

ST JOHN Ambulance cadets from Redhill division were triumphant in the County First Aid Quiz, held in Guildford. Abi Browning, James Williams, Mark Smith, Miriam Spindlove and reserve Britanny Edge won the first place trophy. Second place was taken by Tara Bryant, Katie Nash, David Loftus and Laura Standivan, who has only been a cadet for eight months. The regional heats will be held in May.
High Sheriff's celebration

YOUNG people from the U Project in Horley attended a celebration held by the High Sheriff of Surrey. Michael Clark and Shannon Vincent are pictured with the mayor of Reigate and Banstead, Dorothy Ross-Tomlin, High Sheriff Nicholas Sealy, PCSO Angie Walker and PC Ian Yeo. The evening celebrated the achievements of those given High Sheriff Youth Awards during the year. The U Project, a youth club in Court Lodge Road supported by Surrey Police, received £1,000 for equipment.
Easter services

CHURCHES Together in Redhill held a procession of witness through the town centre on Good Friday morning, led by Father Laurence Quinn-Morris, of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, the Rev Bill Prince, of Redhill Methodist Church, and the Rev John Joseph, of Redhill United Reformed Church. A service was held in Warwick Quadrant, led by Mr Prince. A good crowd attended the sunrise service at Redhill Common on Easter Day at 7am, led by the Rev Nicholas Calver, of St John's.
