Thieves target card machine
WOULD-BE thieves tried to steal a chip and pin terminal from a petrol station in Horley.
Two men entered the garage in Brighton Road yesterday at 2.45pm and one was spotted putting two drinks bottles in his pockets.
When a member of staff asked him to put them back he tried to remove the card reader by cutting the wires but fled empty handed.
Surrey Police are appealing for information and are urging shopkeepers to keep chip and pin terminals properly secured.
Chief Inspector of Operations Lesley Ashworth said: "Credit card fraud is a serious crime, something which Surrey Police is committed to tackling.
"People who commit these kind of offences are constantly looking for different ways to gain access to valuable personal information.
"To help us win the fight against these criminals it is vital retailers put measures in place which properly safeguard chip and pin terminals.
"If all retailers implement some simple crime prevention tips we can reduce the opportunities available to the thieves."
The suspect is white, in his early 20s, 5ft 7in tall, of medium build with a shaven head. He was wearing a black fleece with white sleeves, blue jeans and white trainers.
He was accompanied by a black man in his mid 20s, 5ft 5in tall, of medium build and with short hair. He was wearing a white t-shirt, black trousers and black trainers.
Anyone with information is asked to call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222.
