Young East Surrey bands to join star's outfit live in Redhill
1:27pm Tuesday 4th September 2012 in Local News
Four local bands will be joining Eastenders’ star Shane Richie and his group, The Prelude, in a showcase date in Redhill in aid of youth centres across East Surrey.
The bands – Aphelion, Skyline, Blue Persuit and Every – will be going live at the newly reopened Harlequin Theatre in the gig this Sunday (September 9).
The YES!fest concert is being held to promote and to fundraise for youth centres across East Surrey, with the aim of offering more exciting and inspiring activities in which young people can get involved.
Reigate and Redhill YMCA’s Young East Surrey team, based at the Sovereign Centre in Reigate, are aiming to create a festival atmosphere at the event while fittingly featuring the talent of local young musicians.
Aphelion formed early this year as a heavy rock group.
Guitarist, Brad Steer, 17, said: “We can’t wait to see how people react to our performance.
“It will give us the opportunity to expand our fan base and see how the audience finds the music.
“Playing alongside Shane’s band will be a great experience.”
Joining him in Aphelion are Toby Draper, Ben Norton and Seb Boulton, all 16.
Brad said: “Our local youth centre – The Street in Caterham – has given us a great base to get together and develop our music whenever we have the chance.
“It’s a purpose-built centre designed by young people, and it was youth and community worker, Donna Ware, who put us forward to audition for YES!fest.
“She knows how important performing is to us and now we have this fantastic gig booked.”
YMCA youth services administrator, Zahra Dhaimish, said she has ambitious plans for the future of YES!fest.
She said: “We would like it to take place every year to reflect the inspirational work that the YMCA and other local youth centres are doing in East Surrey.
“We look forward to making it a memorable occasion for everyone.”
Tickets for YES!fest at The Harlequin this Sunday (September 9) from 7pm to 10pm, are priced £10 each and are available through the booking office on 01737 276500, or from the YMCA’s Sovereign Centre in Woodhatch.
