Reigate Society unveils first meeting of its forthcoming events year

The Reigate Society, the civic society for Reigate, Redhill and Merstham, celebrating its 60th year, has announced details of the first meeting of its forthcoming events calendar.

Railway historian Bruce Healey will open the group's anniversary events year with a talk on the Croydon, Merstham and Godstone Iron Railway, at the Woodhatch Centre in Hornbeam Road, Reigate, on Monday, October 8.

The railway was an extension of the world's first public railway, and opened in the early years of the nineteenth century.

The unusual and pioneering line ran to Merstham and although it was the object of much international interest, is now largely forgotten.

Mr Healey's talk at 8pm will be for society members and their guests only, with admission by ticket.
