International concert pianist to perform on home ground in Redhill

Redhill international concert pianist Kevin Kenner is to join the Redhill Sinfonia for a special anniversary performance in the town next month.

Kevin, who tours worldwide and won a prize in the Tchaikovsky Piano competition in 1990, will be performing with Redhill Sinfonia to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Chopin.

The Polish composer was born two centuries ago in March 1810.

Redhill Sinfonia will be teaming up with Kevin to kick off the celebratory year performing Chopin’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No1 at The Harlequin, Redhill, on Saturday, March 6.

Kevin has been hailed as one of the world’s leading Chopin interpreters.

He has made numerous recordings specialising in Chopin’s piano music.

This year his full schedule will see him touring Europe and North America, and in October he will be a judge in the International Chopin Competition.

The programme at The Harlequin will also feature Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony, composed in 1937 during Stalin’s reign of terror, as a response to negative comments about the composer's previous work. The concert will begin at 7.45pm and tickets are available in advance from the Harlequin box office on 01737 276500, online at www.harlequintheatre.co.uk or on the door on the night, priced £12, concessions £10, and £6 for under 18s.

Redhill Sinfonia is one of the oldest amateur orchestras in the country and has been performing concerts in Redhill and Reigate for more than 100 years.

Originally Redhill Sinfonia held concerts in the old Market Hall, Redhill, but now performs in the Harlequin and Reigate Park Church.

Details of Redhill Sinfonia concerts can be found at its website: www.redhillsinfonia.org.uk
