A woman from Merstham has won a community award in recognition of her work supporting a local charity.
Maureen Hooker, of Nutfield Road, has been presented with a Volunteer Award by Reigate and Banstead mayor Richard Mantle, for her work for St Catherine's Hospice in Crawley.
Maureen has been a volunteer for the charity for many years.
St Catherine's provides specialised end of life care for people living in East Surrey, Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex.
Maureen has organised numerous events in support of the hospice, including open garden days, plant sales and lunches, which have raised more than £27,000.
She has also been a volunteer in St Catherine’s Redhill charity shop since 2002.
She was presented with her Volunteer Award at a ceremony organised through the Mayor of Reigate and Banstead’s Annual Community Awards Scheme.
Maureen said: “It is wonderful to hear that I have been chosen to receive a Volunteer Award from the mayor of Reigate.
“I would like to thank all of the people who have helped to make my events possible, including my husband Michael.
“It is a pleasure to be able to support St Catherine’s, my local hospice, and my community, and I would encourage anyone else to do the same.”
Claire Stock, St Catherine’s community fundraising manager, said: “Maureen is an extremely modest and generous person whose events are greatly enjoyed by everyone who attends them. “Her contribution to the running of our Redhill shop is also much appreciated.”
She said: “We are hugely reliant on the goodwill of volunteers like Maureen, who do so much to raise funds and awareness in the local community about our work.”
