The Reigate and Banstead team took an impressive 10th place in the annual Better Club Games at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The team, competing against 600 others aged between 55 and 95 at the Copper Box Arena, even managed a second placed finish in the short tennis.

They will, however, surely be even more pleased to have grown from five members to 36 in the last year.

A team member praised the “wonderful” 2012 Olympic venue and also said they were inspired to see other over 55s still active.

The event, run by leisure company Better included 17 teams from London and the surrounding areas and is geared to increase the participation of older people in sport.

The 1984 Olympic Javelin gold medallist Tessa Sanderson was on hand to present the winners with their awards, with Team Greenwich claiming the overall title from Epsom & Ewell in second and Merton in third.

Peter Bundey, Deputy Managing Director of GLL, the charity that runs Better, said they were “committed to encouraging a healthy active lifestyle for older people.”

Mr Bundey branded the event “the Olympic legacy in action” and hopes that the 600 plus participants “will serve as an inspiration to younger generations.”

As well as providing community leisure services, the employee-owned society also runs the GLL Sports Foundation, one of the largest independent support programmes for young British athletes.

The games took place on on Friday 17 October.
