A woman spotted by passers-by entering a river in Horley, was helped to safety by a police officer.

PC Mark Fulham of Reigate and Banstead Safer Neighbourhood Team, waded in to help the woman after worried onlookers raised the alarm.

PC Fulham went to the scene at Riverside Park last Wednesday (July 9) at about 3.30pm.

On arriving, with the woman, aged in her 50s, in the river, he called for help from PCSO Maureen Langley, before wading in.

South East Coast Ambulance Service was also called to the scene.

PC Fulham said: "I had to wait for a couple of colleagues to arrive because it wasn't easy to help her out on my own.

"I didn't think there was any significant risk of going in because the river was slow-flowing and we were only up to our waists, but it was still a distressing situation for those involved and who witnessed it.”

He added: "I wouldn't hesitate to do the same again and hope it demonstrates how much officers care about what they do.”

The woman was later detained under the Mental Health Act.
