The Horley Carnival is to return this summer.

The town's big day with a procession of floats, arena displays, a funfair and stalls, centring on Horley Recreation Ground, off the A23 Brighton Road, has been set for Saturday, June 7.

The free event will run from noon through to 5pm.

The carnival committee has high hopes for the event this year, following on from last summer's bumper turn-out, which saw the day hailed an “outstanding success.”

The event was revived by the town council and local groups and businesses after the success of the Queen's Jubilee Fun Day celebrations of 2012.

The continued success of Horley's St George's Day revels has also buoyed up the town's community spirit.

Last April, an estimated 7,000 people enjoyed the sixth annual day of family fun – a record turn-out for the event which showed that despite the ongoing economic straits which have claimed some retail casualties in the town centre, there is still a big public demand for colour and spectacle in Horley.

This year, the Horley Carnival committee has announced the event will have the theme of Musicals, with imaginative ideas invited, particularly for floats in the procession. There will also be a fancy dress competition, again using the theme of Musicals, which will be judged after the procession has arrived at the Recreation Ground, with prizes being awarded after the judging.

In addition, there will be a children’s poster competition, which will be judged ahead of the event, with prizes being awarded for the posters which best advertise the carnival.

Last year, stall holders were allocated positions around the ground on a first-come, first-served basis, and the demand was high.

Interested parties are being advised to contact the organisers early to avoid disappointment.

A spokesman for the carnival committee said: “Plans for the parade are already well advanced, with the Redhill Corp of Drums booked to lead the procession, as it moves through the town en route for the carnival ground.

“Horley is never short of good talent, and already significant demand has been experienced to perform in the arena, so, all in all, it looks likely to be a roaring success.”
