Nuclear disarmament campaigners coming to Reigate
11:00am Tuesday 5th November 2013 in Local News
Reigate is to be the first stop for a national “Ban the Bomb” tour being undertaken by two high-profile figures in the field.
MP and vice chairman of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), Jeremy Corbyn, and Dr Rebecca Johnson, co-chairman of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), are to speak at Reigate Quaker Meeting House in Reigate Road.
The meeting, organised by Reigate and Redhill Peace Campaign, will take place on Wednesday, November 13, at 7.30pm, with admission free. The gathering will hear about the process starting in the United Nations (UN) to negotiate an international treaty to prohibit nuclear weapons.
Chemical weapons have already long been banned. The progress being made on attempts to achieve nuclear disarmament will also be explained. After the event, Dr Johnson, who will have returned from UN meetings in New York and the Middle East days before speaking in Reigate, is to speak at meetings in Bedford, Manchester, Peterborough, Totnes, Bristol and Cardiff.
Dr Johnson is the former senior adviser to Dr Hans Blix on the International Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Commission, and is CND Vice President. Mr Corbyn is also vice-chairman of International Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament.
David Hilder, chairman of the Reigate and Redhill branch of CND, said the issue was “vitally important” because the UK government continues to push for the renewal of the Trident nuclear weapons system, despite the UN's attempts to ban all such weapons. He said: “With the general election due in 2015 and Parliament deciding on Trident renewal in 2016, it is even more important that local people are informed on the issue, so that when voting they can make the right choice - especially as Trident renewal will mean taxpayers forking out £100 billion for nuclear weapons we don’t need.” For more details call Sue Fenton on 07931 541369 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org Website: www.cnduk.org www.icanw.org
