Horley celebrates more success in the South and South East in Bloom Competition
4:20pm Sunday 15th September 2013 in Local News
Horley Town Council is celebrating winning two prestigious awards in this year’s South and South East in Bloom competition.
The council picked up a coveted Silver Gilt Award for the town centre for the third year on the trot.
And it took another Silver Gilt Award for Horley Recreation Ground, off the A23 London Road.
That award was given for the fifth year running.
The South and South East in Bloom judges, who toured the town in the summer, gave both Horley town centre and the recreation ground much improved marks.
A town council spokesman said: “The judges said that town councillors 'have a passion about their town centre, and the fact that councillors use their own time to litter pick and inspect play equipment is to be commended.'”
The awards ceremony was held in Tunbridge Wells in Kent last Wednesday (September 11).
Horley town mayor and town council chairman Richard Olliver, and deputy town clerk Carol Fenton, received the awards from Chris Collins, TV's Blue Peter gardener.
Coun Olliver said: “I was very pleased to again receive two Silver Gilt Awards and I was delighted that our marks improved.
“My thanks go to all those who keep our town centre and open spaces looking so splendid.”
The town's repeated success in the regional annual competition has delighted councillors, who have stressed the importance of the event in promoting community spirit and local pride, especially in the current challenging economic times.
South and South East in Bloom promotes, supports and encourages community activity through gardening, horticulture and environmental sustainability. Recent years have seen the town council's annual Horley in Spring and Horley in Bloom competitions grow in popularity and size, with more categories added.
The town council will be holding its own awards ceremony for the Horley in Bloom competition and other associated events, including the new town photographic competition, at Regent Hall in Albert Road, Horley, on Friday, September 27, at 7.30pm.
