Debt charity flags up plight of struggling Redhill households
10:00am Saturday 31st August 2013 in Local News
A charity has said many households in Redhill are struggling to make ends meet in the current economic downturn with debts higher than the UK national average.
StepChange Debt Charity has flagged up the plight of the many homeowners in the town who it says are barely able to cover the cost of everyday living.
The cause added a combination of conditions in the downturn have “tipped many households over the edge into unmanageable debt.”
The charity has drawn upon figures based on its StepChange Debt Charity Debt View analysis of client statistics, broken down by region, by area and by postcode. Citing the new figures, the charity said that in the first six months of this year, Redhill residents contacting its helpline had just £28 left each month, after accounting for their essential living costs. The cause stated that during the first six months of this year, 483 people from the Redhill area contacted its helpline about their debt problems.
The calls included people's worries about credit cards, personal loans, payday loans and other debts. The charity stated that on average, people contacting it from the Redhill area owed £16,803.
That average total is £2,711 higher than the UK national average debt of £14,092.
Frances Walker of StepChange Debt Charity said: “A combination of stagnating incomes and spiralling living costs has tipped many households over the edge into unmanageable debt”.
Ms Walker said: “Too often those in financial difficulty wait almost a year before seeking advice, and in that time their position has deteriorated.”
She stressed: “It is crucial that anyone who finds themselves in this position should seek advice and support at the earliest opportunity.”
