The Rotary Club of Horley recently held its fourth Annual Potato Competition in which members and friends, including a number from Reigate and Reigate Hill Rotary Clubs, bought a potato and container for £5, with the grown results then weighed at a barbecue.
The winner was Rotarian Rob Whitfield from the Reigate Club with a total weight of 1,247g - down by 423g on last year’s competition winner, Rotarian Roy O’Donnell of the Horley Club.
David Ross of the Rotary Club of Horley said: “Knowledgeable gardeners present put it down to a poor growing season and a smaller pot being used.
“However a good time was had by all. Rob will hold the magnificent trophy for the year.”
He said 81 potatoes were sold and with a raffle, a total of £570 was raised to help towards the running and maintenance of the club’s minibus.
