A Salfords dog lover has penned a book of 20 dog-walking routes designed to combine the beauties of the Surrey landscape with the ease of avoiding busy roads and impassable stiles.

Jane Eyles has put together Surrey: A Dog Walker's Guide to promote the health benefits of dog walking with some of her favourite strolls.

The routes included take walkers across the heathlands at Banstead Commons, Esher Common and Whitmore Common, beside the waterside at Frensham Little Pond, the River Wey and the Tilling Bourne, and through the woods at Box Hill, Sheepleas and Staffhurst.

Along the way there are chances to visit the site of an Iron Age hillfort at Hascombe Hill, the gothic hilltop tower at Leith Hill, the McLaren Technology Park at Woking, and Reigate Heath windmill, the bottom of which has been converted into a chapel – the only one of its kind in the world.

Jane said: “A walk with a dog should be a pleasure, lowering your stress levels and keeping you healthy.”

Jane, who has two dogs, Benson, a Golden Retriever, and Meg, an RSPCA rescued dog, said: “I hope my book will provide readers and their dogs with many happy hours of inspiring and enjoyable walks together.”

The 20 routes chosen have been designed by Jane to combine the maximum off-lead time with the minimum exposure to roads, and vary in length from two to five miles.

Each walk has information on the distance and terrain, livestock likely to be encountered, the number and type of stiles en route, and in an emergency, the nearest vets.

Each section has clear numbered route instructions and includes information on how to get to the start of the walk, places of interest along the way and local pubs and cafes which welcome dogs.

Jane also wrote Dog Walk of the Month for Surrey Life magazine.

Surrey: A Dog Walker's Guide is published by Countryside Books, is priced £7.95 and is available from all good booksellers, some garden centres and attractions, and direct from the publishers at: www.countrysidebooks.co.uk
