World's Biggest Coffee Morning dates in East Surrey

Parched people across East Surrey are being invited to enjoy a drink at one of a number of coffee mornings being held in aid of a leading cancer charity.

Macmillan Cancer Support's annual showcase fundraiser, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, will be taking place around the UK, with the cause hoping the 1090 or so coffee mornings taking place across the Surrey area alone, will raise about £187,500.

The charity is hoping that UK-wide, the mornings of drinking coffee and eating cake will help it raise more than £10.7 million.

One host supporting the event in Horley will be Penny Dancer.

She will be holding her fifth consecutive event for the charity, having raised more than £2,700 to date. Penny first heard about the event in 2008 and decided her big garden could be the perfect venue for a garden party.

She said: “When I heard of the event, some good friends of mine had been going through their own cancer experiences and had needed help from Macmillan and the local hospice.

“Inviting people to join me for coffee and cake seemed like an easy enough idea so I set about getting a party organised, and it somewhat grew from there.”

Penny’s event will be held at Hutchins, off Kidworth Close, Horley, this Saturday (September 29) from 11am onwards.

There will be the customary cake stall and refreshments, but Penny will also be serving bacon sandwiches, and guests can buy home-made clothing accessories, home-made cards, fresh produce and preserves, and join in the raffle and tombola or other fun games.

Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Surrey, Helene Poursain, said: “Last year, thanks to people such as Penny, we raised a record-breaking amount of money form the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, and we really hope we can repeat that again this year.”

She said: “I think it’s a mark of how much people love this event that every year it gets bigger and bigger. “People can be so busy that catching up with friends, workmates or even family can be difficult. “This event gives them a reason to make time for each other while also doing something really valuable for people with cancer and their families.”

There will also be a coffee morning held by Sue Woodall at Reigate Lawn Tennis Club, Manor Road, Reigate, on Friday (September 28) from 10.30am onwards, with the £2.50 entry fee to include cake and coffee, as well as a raffle and plant, book and craft stalls.

Other coffee mornings will take place at Bletchingley Golf Club , Bletchingley, on Friday from 10am onwards, at Reigate Community Centre at 53 High Street, Reigate, on Saturday (September 29) from 10am to 1pm, with refreshments, cakes and a raffle, and at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, on Friday, October 5, from 10am to noon, with home-made cakes, refreshments and a raffle.
