Reigate art teacher to saddle up for 900-mile fundraiser

A Reigate artist and art teacher will be laying down his brushes and setting off on a 900-mile solo bike ride next month.
For Nathaniel Fowles, who teaches art at Reigate Grammar School, will be setting off on Thursday, August 2, to fulfill an ambition he has long harboured – to cycle the length of the UK by himself and completely unsupported.
He will be pedal-powering his way from John O'Groats to Lands End via the North West and West Midlands to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Nathaniel already knows the physical challenge he will be facing.
He successfully completed the gruelling Blenheim Triathlon last year and raised nearly £800 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.
This time he is aiming to raise £1,500, with the trip itself being completely self-funded and all of the money raised going to the charity.
Nathaniel, 37 said: “Many people I know have been affected directly or indirectly by cancer, including a recent scare with my own family.”
He said: “Cancer Research UK is the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research, and it is a cause I wholeheartedly support.”
Nathaniel, who is a full-time teacher at Reigate Grammar School, is a practicing artist who paints evocative scenes of London.
However, for his bike ride, he will be attempting something a little different.
He said: “I will be keeping my Twitter blog up to date with news about my preparation and progress.
“My blog will include my ‘sketch of the day’ project, which has been running since the beginning of the year, where I will be posting images of drawings and artwork documenting the journey.”
