MP "thrilled" at big rise in apprenticeships in East Surrey

East Surrey MP Sam Gyimah has said he is “thrilled” by a 61% increase in the number of apprenticeships in East Surrey.

Mr Gyimah was speaking on a tour of the area during national apprenticeship week.

His itinerary included East Surrey College in Redhill, where he was interviewed on camera by students, as well as visits to Woldingham Long Hill, Caterham, Crowhurst and Oxted.

Against the backdrop of promoting the Government's drive for new apprenticeships, demonstrating the wide range available, the standard of skills they achieve and the progression routes available, Mr Gyimah said: “Building on the success of last year’s National Apprenticeship Week in East Surrey, I had the privilege of visiting a number of different businesses which all offer excellent apprenticeship schemes.

“In particular, it is good to see so many small businesses investing in young people, and giving them the opportunities and skills to succeed.”

He said: “At a time when jobs and growth are what is needed, I am thrilled that East Surrey experienced a significant rise of 61% in the number of apprenticeships from last year.

“East Surrey businesses are demonstrating their serious commitment to provide opportunities for the next generation.”

Mr Gyimah's tour was taking place as Surrey County Council announced success in its campaign to fill 200 apprentice places in 100 days.

The county council said it had reached its goal “with time to spare.”

A county council spokesman said: “Employers have been coming forward since the end of September pledging to take on apprentices as part of the council’s push to ensure all 16 to 19-year-olds in Surrey are in education, training or employment by 2015.”
