Charity to launch ground-breaking scheme in Horley

A national charity is to launch a ground-breaking eco-friendly accommodation service for people with multiple disabilities in Horley.

SeeAbility, formerly The Royal School for the Blind, will open the supported living service in Massetts Road later this year, providing specially-designed accommodation for six people.

The charity said the scheme stands to become one of the most eco-friendly accommodation services of its kind in the UK.

SeeAbility specialises in creating individually tailored services for people with a visual impairment and additional disabilities to help them maximise their independence through personal development and integration into the local community. The new development will incorporate a range of environmentally aware systems which make it sustainable and more cost-effective to run. These innovations are particularly beneficial to people with complex disabilities who need a constant level of heating and hot water.

The features will include solar hot water panels with the need for a boiler only in extremely cold conditions, fibreglass-coated cylinders for water storage, a heat recovery system recycling warm air back into the building and helping prevent damp and mould, and design features such as textural and colour coding in rooms, wheelchair access and wet-room-style bathrooms.

Justin Roxburgh, SeeAbility housing and development director, said: “This new development is a ground-breaking step in the provision of accommodation for people with a visual impairment and additional disabilities.”

He said: “We are delighted that we are launching this in Horley which has been such a supportive community for SeeAbility residents at Woodlands.”

SeeAbility is the operating name for The Royal School for the Blind, which has provided support for people who are blind or partially sighted and have additional disabilities for more than 200 years.
