Staff at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill have been marking 25 years of providing quality health care for the area.
Reigate and Banstead mayor Richard Mantle visited the hospital to join staff and volunteers a quarter of a century after the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher officially opened it on August 3, 1984.
He helped volunteers of the charity Friends of East Surrey Hospital in the shops handing out free hot drinks to visitors, patients and staff for the occasion.
Catherine Greenaway, the medical director at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said: “This is a milestone for staff, patients and the community. “Staff are committed professionals and a recent survey said that nine out of ten patients would recommend the hospital to family and friends.”
Achievements in the hospital's 25 years include the hospital's expansion in 1991, becoming the first hospital in Europe to introduce a new ground-breaking procedure for scar free surgery, and expanding the maternity unit, delivering more than 4,000 babies a year.
