Survey finds most people happy to live in Surrey

More than eight out of ten people are happy with Surrey as a place to live, according to a Government survey.

The Place Survey found that 84.2% of Surrey’s residents were satisfied with the area.

The poll found that 82% of people in Surrey said their health was good or very good, and nearly 86% of people aged over 65 were happy with both home and neighbourhood.

Eight out of ten people agreed that their local area in Surrey was a place where people from different backgrounds got on well together.

The poll found seven in ten people were very or fairly satisfied with the recycling facilities they were provided with.

Surrey County Council leader Andrew Povey said: “People want to know that their council is listening to what they say, acting on their concerns and showing that what it does can really make a difference, so I am delighted most people believe Surrey is a good place to live.”

He said: “The survey shows our residents are happy with many of the high-quality services we provide, and it is also clear that Surrey people are happier with their local area than people are elsewhere in the country.”

Mr Povey added: “We are committed to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for local people and these results prove we are doing well – but our focus will remain firmly on making Surrey an even better place to live.

“As a listening council, we will use the information the survey has provided to inform future projects and to continue tackling the issues that concern our residents the most.

“Looking for the most efficient working practices while delivering high quality services for our residents is even more important in the current difficult economic climate, so we will work even harder to ensure public money is spent in the best and most resident-focused way.”

In Surrey, the survey said nearly five out of ten people (48.9%) were very or fairly satisfied with how the county council “runs things” – above the England average of 45.4% and the South East average of 47%.

The survey's 37.5% figure for people who strongly or tended to agree that the county council offered value for money was also above the national (33.2%) and South East (34.4%) averages.

The Place Survey was published by the Department for Communities and Local Government and conducted by post.

Its purpose was to provide a measure of how effective public services are within local authority areas and people’s perception of life in their locality.

In Surrey, 14,078 people completed the survey.
