A man from Redhill has died after being pulled from the sea.

The coastguard received a call at 7.05am on Saturday from a friend of the man saying he had lost sight of the 22-year-old off the coast at Brighton.

Coastguard rescue teams from Newhaven and Shoreham were tasked to search for the man along the shore, along with RNLI lifeboats from Brighton and Newhaven, and the coastguard rescue helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent.

Following a search of the area, the man was found within 45 minutes and brought ashore by a lifeguard and the Brighton lifeboat.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "The man was pulled from the water and efforts were made to revive him, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

"The man is believed to be a 22-year-old from Redhill, Surrey. The coroner has been informed."
