East Surrey detectives are appealing for information after a car fire close to Redhill town centre, which is believed to have been of suspicious origin.

The fire took hold at around 2.20am on Monday, July 7, while the vehicle, a silver Volkswagen Sharan, was parked in Holland Close.

Fire investigators helped police officers at the scene.

A Surrey Police spokesman said it is believed an accelerant was used to start the blaze.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Sarah Jupp, said: “It is possible, due to the location of the fire, that someone will have seen the offender, even though the incident occurred at a quiet time of day.”

She said: “I would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact Surrey Police with this information.

“It is likely that the offender will have returned home smelling of either accelerant or smoke, so if you have your suspicions around someone you know, please share these concerns with us.”

Officers from the Reigate and Banstead Safer Neighbourhood Team visited the area following the blaze to provide reassurance patrols and make enquiries.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference 45140056280. Alternatively, people can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
