A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following four fires in the Reigate and Horley areas.

The 43-year-old man from Epsom was arrested on Saturday (July 5).

The fires, which Surrey Police officers believe to be linked, all occurred in the early hours of the morning.

The most recent blaze was at a property in Massetts Road, Horley, last Wednesday (July 2).

A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the fire, at about 3.45am, took hold in a big pile of timber and involved the building's guttering.

He said crews from Reigate, Horley and Crawley went to the scene and used jets and ladders to douse the flames, which slightly damaged the roof of the property.

The blaze followed three others at sports clubs in Horley and Reigate, which all came within a week, wrecked buildings and caused thousands of pounds of damage.

At the Old Reigatian Rugby Club in Park Lane, Reigate, flames badly damaged the main clubhouse at around 4am on Saturday, June 28.

Six days earlier, fire swept through the £250,000 clubhouse of the Horley Lawn Tennis Club in Vicarage Lane, Horley.

The building, still under construction but nearing completion after four years of local fundraising by club members and a donation from Sport England, was wrecked in the early hours of Sunday, June 22, with the roof collapsing.

Four days later, another suspicious fire, this time at Churchfields Bowls Club in Church Walk, Reigate, at around 2.30am, destroyed the club's wooden pavilion, along with all the equipment inside it.

The building had itself replaced the club's earlier pavilion, which had been destroyed by fire in 2000.

A Surrey Police spokesman said the 43-year-old Epsom man arrested on Saturday, had been released on bail until Thursday, August 21.
